Batman Begins

As usual, probably spoilers here…

I think I like this batman more than the previous ones. I liked his back story and how it was told and I would have even liked some more. I liked how his teacher became his enemy. I liked the look of Gotham and how it looked old and modern at the same time. I liked Christian Bale as batman and I think he’s ok as Bruce Wayne but in general his character isn’t very good at Bruce Wayne yet so that’s ok. I also like that they built a real batmobile that could do all its own stunts. No computer graphics or models!

If you like dark batman then see this movie.

    ****possible spoilers*****

I really enjoyed Christian Bale, especially because he took some of the awful writing and turned it around, making it a bit more real with his delivery. Admittedly, it took me a little while to adjust to the idea of him being Bruce Wayne because in the beginning, he didn’t seem to have any life to him. And I always thought that as Bruce Wayne, he had more oomph and charm oozing from him. He seemed so remote, but neither cold or warm.

Then, somewhere in that first couple of scenes, I said, “yes, he’s good” and then got into the movie. The creation of his suit was such a “real” moment for me too… with finding the stuff down in the headquarters and testing out all of the experiments… I mean, really… it’s true. How many costumed superheroes were flying around then? And ordering the headgear in bulk! And like in Spiderman, I liked watching his training and evolution as he experimented with different toys and developing his facade. He did an amazing job with his body too… actors who can do extreme weight loss and gain, body muscle to and fro somehow impresses me…. maybe because that’s something that I have always wished to do.

I liked the special effects and the introduction of how the bat cave was found (for some reason, I never knew that). And the bats that were found in the house… I also loved how they played out the scene in which his parents were killed…. after reading those scenes over and over in the books, it was cool to see it in life… although it would’ve been neat to see how Bruce always puts roses there. I liked that Katie Holmes’ character wasn’t an annoying sort of girl. And I liked how Michael Caine played his Alfred. The batmobile and the driving lessons were awesome. And the introduction on how to call Batman to the scene. Ooooh, and the guy that played Gordon rocked. Great costume design. Overall, really strong production design. Not so great makeup. Lighting was okay… I think I would’ve made the flashbacks a bit more extreme, either warm or cold.

This isn’t a movie that I’d pay the $10 to see in the theaters again, but if there was a sequel, I’d be there.

One thing I didn’t like was the sound mixing seemed nto so good. A number of times (usually with the Scarecrow) I couldn’t make out what was being said. Not that it mettered too much I suppose “Insert scary dialogue here”.

I’m totally there fo rthe sequel. I wonder who will play the Joker?
