Drum & Bass

So like 4 or 5 years ago or so at the last rave I went to one room where I really liked the music had what I learned was drum & bass. Like 3 years ago I heard in a Borders some music I really liked. I asked at the desk what was playing and they showed me it was LTJ Bukem – “Journey Inwards”. I put it on my wish list and never got it.

This year on our honeymoon I was in a cd store and looked for it and found instead another LTJ Bukem album. Then shortly afterwards I picked up “Journey Inwards”.

Yesterday Nightfall posted about Method-One so I downloaded the mp3 files I found there and liked it a lot. (We’re talking LONG mp3 files.) Today I asked mo what else I should be getting. She told me: Dieselboy, DJ Dara, Kaos, Goldie, and Grooverider. So I went to Streetlight and picked up a geeky sounding album from Dieselboy called “The Dungeonmaster’s Guide”. I’m enjoying it muchly.

Thanks for the pointers!

Car in the shop

So last week the car started running hot and running rough. When I stopped for gas I looked under the hood and realized I did something really dumb. When last I added a quart of oil a few weeks ago (it needs a quart every few thousand miles) I forgot to put the oil cap back on. And it’s not like I set it in some place I wouldn’t notice it, it was 3-4 inches from the place it screws on!!

So I checked the oil level and it was on the bottom of the area it should be and figured I could make it the rest of the short way to the restaurant and then to home and I did. The oil cap was put back in place with a melted spot on it from the engine.

Anyway, when the oil was added the car ran smoother but it was still hot. Cathi suggested it was the thermostat and looking at the mileage I need to agree with that assessment. The first one only lasted about 80,000 miles and when they replaced it they said it was a poorly made device and there aren’t any better after-market versions.

Anyway, this morning (the day of the car appointment) the temperature light started blinking and smoke/vapor started coming from the engine area. Hopefully something that is fairly reasonable rto replace cost wise didn’t turn expensive.

Something is loose

This morning I went to ride to work and the motor wouldn’t run. No reaction at all from the throttle control. However the lights still worked. I didn’t recall a fuse on any of the wires for the motor so it’s either the controller or a loose wire.

I popped up the panel in front of the seat where most of the wires are and move some around trying to look for a loose connection. The motor starts working again. I continue to check and it stops. I push everything back and it works.

So a connector might not be so great, or the wire running in to the controller is loose just inside the controller. In either case it shouldn’t be so hard to fix. This does explain the occasional moment on a bump when it would feel like it lost power.

Home Depot for your time wasting needs

Yesterday Nicole and I went to Home Depot in Watsonville to get a new medicine cabinet for Dar’s bathroom. We find the medicine cabinets and even find one we like. Then we find that they don’t have any so we go to the customer service desk to special order it.

The CS desk says they need the SKU# and start to call someone. Knowing it’ll take awhile for someone to get back there I tell them I’ll get it. I return a few minutes later with the SKU and they look it up. The computer reports that they have two of them in stock and so they can’t order it.

They call someone to go look for them and he then goes walking out the front door. We ask where he will be. They said “Here (CS desk) or there (cabinet aisle).” I figure we should wait by the cabinet aisle since then if he makes it there but not back to the CS desk we’ll still have seen him. After about 10 minutes, during which time I talked to Dar to confirm the selection, we go back up front to say he never showed.

They call him again and this time he goes back. After 5 minutes he comes back and says he can’t find any. He also says that he’s not a kitchen & bath guy but is normally the appliance guy. Glad they have enough people and give them the training they need.

So 1.5 hours wasted and no cabinet. We go home and I try to find it on-line. Home Depot’s site doesn’t offer it on-line or even show it exists. The manufacturer says it is exclusively sold at Home Depot.

New bigger tire!

So I put on the new bigger tire (3.5×10) with the extra carrying capacity and it was big enough that if I was sitting on the scooter while moving the battery case would hit the tire. That obviously wouldn’t last long so I loosened the back tire and pulled the wheel back about 1/2″ before re-tightening. Now it has clearance and I have the better tire.

I still need to drill a new hole on either side so I can bolt down the guides for a little extra security. Right now the back wheel could potentially fall off the back, but I’ll have plenty of notice if that’s going to happen in the form of a wobbly tire. Mostly it’ll make it easy to line up the wheel faster.

No more medicine cabinet

Yesterday we ripped ou tthe medicine cabinet in Dar’s bathroom. Today we’ll go to Home Depot to look for a decent replacement. We put the old one in the free pile and someone took the doors. I guess they just wanted the mirrors to hang in their house.

Today I have to pull out the floor heater so the floor guy can see what is needed for repairs.

Dangerous isn’t desirable?

So I was reading the blurbs on recent studies in New Scientist and one that bugged me was one about whether women were attracted to dangerous stunts boys do to get attention. I think I recall a study from like 2 years ago reported in Discover explaining that they were or why.

Anyway, this one claimed that women aren’t but that men are attracted to that behavior. Then I read that they found this out through a survey. I think there’s a big difference in reaction between reading about an act in a survey and actually seeing it. I’ll bet that the results would be quite a bit different if the people were observed while observing these “dangerous acts.”

Walls are scrubbed

Painting will start today on Dar’s bathroom. Yay! Tomorrow morning I’ll put on my new scooter tire and that will be yay too!

Then I’ll remove the floor heater to prepare for floor repairs and I’ll start work on the washing machine drain.

What’s wrong with people today?

Every once in awhile I hear this from Nicole and others. Sometimes it’s “people” sometimes it’s “kids.” It always makes me laugh inside because for a moment the person saying it sounds like a stereotypical old person from some show.

In the past I’ve thought that the people today aren’t much different from the people in the past. One generation is always complaining about the upcoming one. But I think there are some differences and trends that do create differences between people today and those from earlier. And I think these things also made the previous generation the “people today” for the generation before them.

It’s all Hitler’s fault! Not really, but the differention that is at the heart of the complaints seems to have started at the end of World War II with the troops coming home. During that time there was a big push to the suburbs. Cheap suburban homes were built to accomodate all the troops coming home and instead of returning to crowded cities where you had to interact with people on a regular basis, everyone had a little space of their own. Aside from this new found personal space leading to the baby boom, it was also the first step towards personal privacy on a scale not seen before. People had their own retreat. People still talked to their neighbors and made friends with them because old habits die hard and people like to share their experiences.

Next came the automobile everyone had to have. The Model-T did its job and brought the cheap car to the masses, but it wasn’t something you would want to spend a lot of time in. The 50s became a time of explosive growth for cars. Cars suddently looked cool and with the prosperity after the war everyone could afford one. With the car mania can all the services that could support cars. Now restaurants had you eating in cars, you could watch movies in cars, and you could listen to the radio in cars. No need to eat with others, or interact with others in shared entertainment like gathering around the radio or sitting with others in a theater. You still had gatherings because televisions were expensive and the programming was only on for a few hours a day so everyone gathered to watch those shows.

Moving into the 60s radios got smaller and you could carry them with you easily. Stereos got cheaper so people could have their music in their own rooms. Cars continued their growth. All of these things work towards giving people the ability to isolate themselves to their own space even if their space is shared.

The 70s brought about more portable music sources in the form of cassette tapes and more portable playing devices, and headphones started to become common for more isolation from others.

The 80s saw computers start to gain acceptance in the home but there was nothing about them that the average person would want to use on a regular basis. Some people got sucked in but for the average person it wasn’t anything. Home video rentals and cable became big players and many people didn’t see a reason to go to a theater if they could just wait and watch it in their homes and away from the crowds. But small headphones showed up as well as compact discs. These weren’t any more portable than tapes, but they gave people the same quality they would get at home in any device that would play them. Less reason to be in your own space to be in your own “space.”

The 90s saw portable video games start up, portable digital music players which made music even more portable, and even small headphones. People can immerse themselves in their electronic entertainments without carrying too much. Home theaters became popular, giving people similar experiences at home as could be found in a movie theater. People found they could better isolate themselves in their home without the high prices, and hey, home popcorn is just as good for them.

The internet also burst on to the scene and had explosive growth. The internet allowed people to share their experiences with more people than ever before. People became glued to their computers with the new sharing freedom. At the same time it allowed them to share anonymously which means they didn’t have to care for the feelings of others or worry about any consequences for anything they said.

In the 00s digital music players could now carry hundreds of albums in the space of a pack of playing cards and could be listened to on tiny headphones. Complete immersion was possible. Video game devices were better and lasted longer on their batteries. The internet continues to be an outlet without much in the way of consequence.

So what is wrong with people today? People continue to want and continue to get devices andentertainments that allow them to be isolated from one another. When they are isolated they don’t learn or remember how best to communicate with others or interact in other ways. They become selfish since it’s all about them in their personal world of entertainment. In that personal world why do the others matter?
